“Co-op Introduces ‘Flexi Checkouts’ to Enhance Shopping Experience”

Date:

Co-op is set to introduce innovative “flexi checkouts” aiming to reduce waiting times for customers at its stores. These smart tills will offer the flexibility for customers to choose between self-service or cashier-operated options. With the implementation of this new technology provided by Diebold Nixdorf, Co-op plans to equip 150 stores with these advanced checkouts by April.

Aside from the ability to switch between modes, the checkout screens will display price discounts, special offers, and promotions, with potential future functionality for parcel collections. Co-op prides itself on being the first supermarket in the UK to utilize this cutting-edge technology.

David Tyas, Co-op’s head of operations, support centre, and innovation, emphasized the company’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of local communities. He highlighted the importance of providing a seamless shopping experience for customers, whether they prefer quick transactions or engaging with store staff.

In other news, Co-op recently announced the opening of 18 new or upgraded stores in the first quarter of 2026. The inaugural store of the year, located in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire, marks the beginning of an active store expansion initiative to enhance its presence in various communities.

Furthermore, Co-op’s Operations Director, Kate McCrae, emphasized the company’s focus on creating community-centric stores that offer quality products, value, and attractive deals. The expansion plans also include the creation of thousands of new apprenticeships, with a £70 million investment to establish 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030.
