Iran has raised concerns about the potential closure of another strategic waterway known as the “Gate of Tears” following its threat to retaliate against the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, issued a warning that Tehran could block the Bab al-Mandeb, also referred to as the Gate of Tears, which is a perilous passage leading to the important Red Sea shipping route. This route facilitates approximately 15% of global maritime trade, with an estimated 21,340 ships passing through it in 2023.
The Gate of Tears is considered susceptible to attacks by Houthi rebels, who receive support from Iran. Over the period between 2023 and 2025, more than 100 vessels traveling through this major oil shipping route fell victim to assaults by the rebel group.
On April 5, an advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader cautioned that Iran regards Bab al-Mandeb with the same significance as Hormuz. Ali Akbar Velayati emphasized that any repetition of misguided actions by Washington could disrupt global energy and trade flows with significant consequences.
Ghalibaf previously questioned the impact of closing the Bab al-Mandeb Strait on global oil, gas, wheat, rice, and fertilizer shipments, highlighting the critical role it plays in international trade. The strait, being only 18 miles wide at its narrowest point, serves as a crucial sea route connecting Asia to the European market, providing a shorter alternative to circumnavigating Africa.
Experts suggest that if Iran decides to shut down the Bab al-Mandeb, the Houthi rebels are likely to be involved, given their demonstrated capabilities. The Houthis have largely avoided direct involvement in the conflict with Iran since a previous bombing campaign by the US led to a ceasefire. However, the situation could escalate if there are further disruptions caused by actions such as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Donald Trump.
Recent developments have seen Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman advocating for continued military action against Iran, citing it as an opportunity to reshape the Middle East and counter perceived threats to Gulf security posed by Iran.
Iran had previously impacted global oil prices by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Trump to order a blockade in response. The ongoing closure of the strait follows unsuccessful peace talks between Vice President JD Vance and Iranian officials who failed to find common ground on crucial issues.
As the ceasefire deadline approaches, Washington DC has adjusted its war objectives regarding Iran, moving away from regime change and nuclear capability eradication. Trump’s handling of the conflict, particularly his alignment with Israel, has drawn criticism and added complexity to the situation.
