“Long Airport Queues Expected Under New Biometric Checks”

Date:

Concerns over long airport queues are on the rise as new biometric checks are set to be enforced for non-EU travelers entering the Schengen Area, including British citizens. The traditional passport stamping process will be replaced with fingerprint scans and facial recognition technology starting April 10. Despite the intention for a swift procedure, major international airports are already experiencing lengthy queues of up to four hours, particularly in locations with multiple airline operations.

To address this issue, travel expert Jane Bolton from Erna Low has offered four practical tips to help passengers navigate through the potential delays and ensure a smooth start to their journey. With the expectation of extended waiting times due to the enhanced biometric checks, Bolton advises travelers to arrive at the airport three to four hours ahead of their flight, especially during peak travel periods.

For those seeking to minimize their time spent in airport queues, investing in fast-track security options could be a worthwhile consideration. Bolton recommends purchasing fast-track tickets, which typically cost between £3 and £12, as an effective way to bypass long security lines and reduce pre-flight stress.

Furthermore, families traveling under the new system may encounter additional complexities, as children under 12 are exempt from biometric checks but need to be linked to a registered adult. Bolton emphasizes the importance of allowing extra time at the airport for families or larger groups to navigate this process effectively.

In light of Brexit, travelers are reminded to ensure their passports meet the necessary validity requirements for EU travel. Bolton highlights a common oversight where travelers may overlook the issue date of their passport, which could lead to travel disruptions if not compliant with the 10-year issuance rule and three-month validity beyond the departure date.

Staying informed and prepared for these new travel protocols is crucial to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure a hassle-free journey.
