A young man who previously experienced 800 seizures daily has been seizure-free for three years following the use of medical cannabis, which has been described as a “miracle” treatment. Billy Caldwell, now 20 years old, saw a significant improvement in his severe epilepsy after starting cannabis oil treatment in September 2016. This treatment not only transformed his life but also prompted a change in UK law after his medication was confiscated in 2018, leading to a hospital admission due to seizures.
Billy’s determined mother, Charlotte, played a crucial role in advocating for the reinstatement of his NHS-funded prescription for cannabis. This advocacy effort resulted in Billy now leading a normal life, engaging in activities like horse riding and swimming, which seemed impossible when he was constantly experiencing seizures. Charlotte expressed her joy at seeing Billy’s remarkable progress and emphasized the importance of accessible and affordable medical cannabis for patients in need.
Although celebrating Billy’s seizure-free milestone, Charlotte highlighted the challenges in accessing medical cannabis, stressing the need for more affordable and consistent options. She also raised concerns about the current framework, citing issues with private clinics and the lack of NHS-funded prescriptions for medical cannabis, despite the positive impact it has had on over 50,000 patients in the UK.
Charlotte’s initiative, TRACD, aims to bridge the gap between medical cannabis policies and practical implementation. By advocating for regulated recreational cannabis access, she believes it can enhance the separation between medical and recreational users, ultimately benefiting vulnerable patients and improving overall cannabis policy. Charlotte will launch TRACD at the upcoming 420 event in Hyde Park, proposing regulated recreational pilots to gather essential data for informed cannabis policy decisions.
