“Neighborly Dispute Escalates: Woman Attacks with Crutch”

Date:

An individual described as “out of control” reportedly used her crutch to attack her neighbor following the removal of her wisteria plant. Atidel Boutara Cook faced charges of criminal damage for destroying the flowering plant belonging to her upstairs neighbor, Pei Wong, and physically assaulting her on a specific date in the previous year.

During a trial at Highbury Magistrates’ Court, Boutara Cook, aged 50, was accused of striking Ms. Wong with her crutch on the forehead and chest when confronted about the incident. The court was informed that Ms. Wong and her husband, who reside in a Victorian house in north London, own the property where Boutara Cook resides on the ground floor.

According to Ms. Wong, her husband witnessed the defendant cutting down the wisteria and uprooting other plants in the front garden upon his return from work. Despite minimal previous interaction in their 20-year neighborly relationship, the couple descended to address Boutara Cook, with Ms. Wong recording the encounter on her phone.

The situation escalated when Boutara Cook noticed the filming and reacted by becoming verbally aggressive, grabbing Ms. Wong’s phone, and physically striking her with the crutch. Concerned for his wife’s safety, Mr. Scott intervened to prevent further harm as captured in the video footage presented in court.

In her defense, Boutara Cook claimed she removed the wisteria due to its deteriorating condition and its purported impact on her flat’s air quality. However, she admitted to not verifying her rights before taking action and expressed unawareness of the necessity for permission.

The judge ruled Boutara Cook guilty of assaulting Ms. Wong with the crutch and dismissed her claims as unreliable. He instructed both parties to maintain distance and avoid further conflict, granting the defendant conditional bail until the sentencing hearing scheduled for May 6 at the same court.
