“Record-Breaking El Niño Arrives, Signaling ‘Super’ Conditions”

The much-anticipated El Niño has arrived and is already proving to be significant. Climate experts had predicted its development in the central Pacific earlier this year. Over time, models increasingly suggested a strong or “super” El Niño, though it was cautioned that certainty was premature.

In June, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed the warming conditions in the specific Niño 3.4 region of the Pacific Ocean in its monthly update. To qualify as an El Niño, temperatures in this zone must exceed 0.5°C above average. Presently, ocean temperatures are nearly 2°C above average, marking a record high for this time of year.

Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, noted that the temperatures in the traditional Nino 3.4 region have surpassed 2°C, indicating strong El Niño conditions. It is only early July, and these levels are nearing “super” El Niño thresholds.

El Niño and La Niña are part of the broader El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, affecting the Pacific Ocean. La Niña brings cooler temperatures, while El Niño brings warmer conditions. Forecasts suggest the El Niño may peak in October, with some models leaning towards November or December for the climax.

The most robust El Niño in recent times occurred in 2015-2016, with an ocean temperature anomaly of approximately 2.75°C. The speed of transition from La Niña to El Niño has been notably rapid this year. Meteorologist Nat Johnson from NOAA’s geophysical fluid dynamics laboratory highlighted this swift shift and pondered the reasons behind it.

Hausfather expressed initial skepticism regarding models projecting a 4°C above-average El Niño but now acknowledges the increasing possibility. The predictions for a peak around 3.6°C surpass historical El Niño intensities, sparking discussions on climate change influences.

While the Niño 3.4 region has experienced fewer neutral years and significant temperature swings, the role of climate change remains uncertain. Experts are yet to reach a scientific consensus on this matter. Concerns about food security in tropical regions due to anticipated droughts and potential impacts on Canada’s winter climate, including milder temperatures and drier conditions leading to wildfire risks, are highlighted.

Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, Hausfather underscores the importance of preparing for the substantial impacts of El Niño, emphasizing its serious implications for agriculture, natural ecosystems, and oceanic environments.
