Retired Couple Finds Adventure and Income in Home-Sitting

Date:

A retired couple, Barbara and Lawrence Blackwood, aged 72 and 75, have discovered a unique way to earn money and explore different parts of the UK by engaging in home-sitting. They initially delved into home-sitting in 2017 to maintain an active lifestyle during their retirement years.

Home-sitting entails taking care of someone’s residence while they are away, including looking after their pets if needed. Barbara, a former administrative secretary, and Lawrence, a retired police officer, now undertake approximately one home-sit assignment per month, which translates to being away from their own home for almost half of the year.

Barbara mentioned, “After retiring, we didn’t want to be idle. Home-sitting perfectly suited our lifestyle.” Home-sitters typically earn a base amount of £333.06 for a two-week assignment without pets, while tending to two dogs and a cat brings in £367.92 for the same period.

The responsibilities involve around one hour and 45 minutes of daily tasks and include a daily food allowance. Additionally, travel expenses are covered, encompassing both the initial meeting and travel to and from assignments. Home-sitting has not only provided financial benefits for the couple, who reside in Perthshire, Scotland, but has also aided in saving on utility bills, particularly during the colder winter months.

Barbara estimated that during a winter assignment lasting around three to four weeks, they save approximately £47 per month. From September to April, their average monthly savings amount to £31. The couple’s travel expenses to and from assignments are reimbursed, which they often set aside for holiday purposes. Furthermore, they receive a daily food allowance and a modest payment for the assignments, with potential additional compensation depending on the duties required, such as the number of pets involved.

While on assignment, Barbara and Lawrence tend to spend less money, apart from occasional outings for coffee. Their primary motivation, however, remains the care they provide to the pets. The couple has had the opportunity to explore various locations throughout Scotland, broadening their travel experiences significantly.

Lawrence expressed, “We’ve explored many parts of Scotland and cherished every place we’ve visited. We’ve taken care of a diverse range of animals and enjoyed every sit. The flexibility and diversity are what make this experience so special.” He added, “It feels like a brief getaway—a self-catering vacation. Responsibilities are present, but they are all fulfilling and gratifying.”

Barbara emphasized that their main focus is always on ensuring the well-being of the animals under their care. She stated, “Our role is to ensure that pets feel safe, secure, and comfortable within their familiar routine.” With nearly a decade of home-sitting experience, they now engage in numerous repeat assignments, with one family consistently welcoming them back since their inception in 2017.

Barbara concluded, “We have no regrets. Home-sitting has given us a lifestyle we genuinely adore.”
