Bounty hunters have joined the search for a US crew member who was shot down over Iran, following a £50,000 reward offered by leaders in Tehran. The militia members are in a race against Iran’s professional troops and American special forces who are conducting a rescue operation to save their comrade from capture. Despite the incident, President Donald Trump assured that negotiations with Iran’s leaders would proceed unaffected and reiterated the deadline for a deal by Easter Monday to open the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state broadcasters have urged civilians to participate in the search for the missing crew member and promised a reward for capturing the pilot alive. The bounty offered is significant in a region where the average monthly wage is only £150. The crew member, an unnamed weapons systems officer, is believed to have landed in the area after the Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran downed the F-15E aircraft during operations over southern Iran. US Special Forces successfully rescued the pilot in a daring mission utilizing helicopters, aircraft, and drones.
In a separate incident, a US A-10 Thunderbolt supporting the search reportedly crashed into the Persian Gulf after being targeted by Iranian fire. The pilot was safely retrieved. Additionally, two US Blackhawk helicopters involved in the rescue operation were also fired upon but their crew members remained unharmed. Iranian state media released images of debris believed to be from the downed F-15E jet, which belonged to the 494 Squadron of the 48th Fighter Wing based at USAF Lakenheath in Suffolk.
Concerns have been raised that the missing crew member could be used as a propaganda tool by the Iranian regime, drawing parallels to past incidents during the Gulf War. Former British Army head Lord Dannatt expressed worry over the crew member’s situation, emphasizing the challenges faced in locating them. Meanwhile, tensions escalated further as the US announced the cancellation of visas for relatives of deceased Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, leading to conflicting claims from both sides.
In response to recent hostilities, Israel’s airforce conducted a strike on a truck reportedly used for launching ballistic missiles in Iran. The situation remains volatile, with reports of missile engagements and evacuations in various regions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized a continued hardline stance against Iran, targeting key facilities used to fund hostile activities. The complex geopolitical landscape in the region continues to evolve, with multiple countries and actors involved in escalating tensions and military actions.
