Sky has announced a significant change in the way TV is consumed, potentially marking the decline of traditional satellite dishes. The company has ceased selling its Sky Q set-top box online, redirecting new customers to opt for Sky Stream or Sky Glass TVs instead.
In a statement, Sky mentioned, “We’ve unplugged Sky Q. Plug in Sky Stream for less. Sky Q is no longer available to buy online.” Customers looking to purchase Sky Q will now be prompted to consider the more affordable Stream box, with Sky emphasizing, “You can take your viewing to the next level with Sky Stream starting from £15 per month.”
The shift towards Sky Stream and Sky Glass is driven by their delivery of live and on-demand content through internet connectivity, abandoning the need for traditional satellite signals. These options offer quicker setup, eliminating the necessity for engineer visits and wall drilling.
Additionally, Sky Stream and Sky Glass receive frequent updates and feature enhancements, reflecting Sky’s commitment to ongoing improvements. Opting for a basic Sky Stream package is notably cheaper than Sky Q, with prices starting at just £15 monthly.
The move away from Sky Q online sales was anticipated, as the company has been focusing more on streaming-based solutions due to customer preferences. However, existing Sky Q users need not worry as the change only impacts new online orders. Sky Q remains available for purchase through direct phone calls or retail outlets.
While the future leans towards a streaming-centric approach, Sky Q continues to be a popular choice among millions of households, with no immediate plans to discontinue it. Customers can still choose Sky Q by contacting Sky directly or visiting physical stores, in addition to exploring the streaming alternatives of Sky Glass and Sky Stream, which are favored by a majority of new customers.
