Hours after Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding Macklemore’s removal from his tour due to pro-Palestinian remarks, all remaining supporting acts have also decided to leave the tour.
Sheeran expressed his dismay over the Israel-Palestine conflict, labeling it a human tragedy but chose not to take a public stance. Following Macklemore’s removal, supporting acts including Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, Beoga, and Finneas withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Palestinians, leaving the tour without any opening acts.
The decision to remove Macklemore came after venues and promoters informed Sheeran that they would cancel his performances if Macklemore was not ousted as the opening act. Videos from Macklemore’s performances, where he advocated for a free Palestine and expressed solidarity with Palestinians, drew criticism from pro-Israel groups.
Sheeran clarified that removing Macklemore from the tour was the promoter’s decision and not his. Despite Sheeran’s attempts to mediate, the venues remained firm in their stance.
Supporting acts like Aaron Rowe, Beoga, and Lukas Graham cited various reasons for their departure, including historical injustices and their commitment to advocating for justice. Finneas, Billie Eilish’s brother and musical collaborator, also announced his withdrawal from the upcoming tour dates in South America.
The situation has sparked discussions about artists speaking out on sensitive topics like the Gaza conflict and facing repercussions. It remains uncertain whether Sheeran’s tour will proceed without opening acts or seek replacements for the remaining U.S. dates.
This incident has reignited debates on artists’ roles in geopolitical issues and the challenges they face when expressing their views on contentious topics.
