A high-ranking government official has affirmed that there is no intelligence indicating that Iran is actively targeting the United Kingdom. This statement comes in response to Israel’s alert about Iran possessing long-range missiles capable of reaching major European cities, following an incident where the US-UK base Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean was reportedly attacked by Iran.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) shared on X that Iran had launched a long-range missile with a potential range of around 4,000 km, raising concerns about the safety of numerous countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Despite these developments, the UK Cabinet minister Steve Reed emphasized that there is no specific evidence suggesting that Iran is aiming at the UK, and he expressed confidence in the country’s military capabilities to safeguard its assets and citizens.
Regarding Israel’s warning about the ability of Iranian missiles to reach European capitals, Mr. Reed stated that there is no information indicating any efforts by Iran to target Europe. He reiterated the UK’s readiness to defend itself with adequate military resources if such a situation were to arise.
Moreover, Mr. Reed reassured the public that there is currently no need to implement fuel rationing amidst the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He highlighted that the government has a contingency plan in place and encouraged people to purchase fuel as usual. However, he mentioned that interventions were made in the heating oil sector to prevent steep price increases that burdened consumers.
