“UK Navy Thwarts Russian Submarine Spy Mission”

British armed forces successfully thwarted an effort by Russian submarines to spy on crucial undersea cables during a period when global attention was focused on the Iran crisis. The Defence Secretary disclosed that the UK Navy, with over 5,000 personnel involved, detected and monitored Russian submarines and spy vessels in the north Atlantic using a Type 23 frigate, HMS St Albans, RFA Tidespring, and Merlin helicopters. To safeguard undersea cables, the military deployed sonobuoys and conducted more than 50 missions with P-8 Poseidon aircraft. The Defence Secretary sent a clear message to Vladimir Putin, cautioning against any attempts to harm the cables. Despite distractions in the Middle East, the UK remains vigilant against Russian threats, with the Ministry of Defence releasing satellite images of Russia’s naval base in the High North. The UK’s military readiness has been tested by a surge in Russian vessels near UK waters, with recent incidents involving shadow fleet tankers. The Defence Secretary emphasized the UK’s commitment to protecting national and economic security, while also responding to criticism regarding military asset deployments in the Middle East. Furthermore, he addressed remarks made by Donald Trump, underscoring the significance of actions over words. Regarding NATO, the Defence Secretary highlighted the ongoing commitment of the US and the importance of European nations, including the UK, fulfilling their obligations.
