“Iran Warns UK Over US Military Bases Usage”

Date:

Iran has issued a warning, expressing concerns over the utilization of British military bases by US forces, which it perceives as an aggressive move. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed this stance during a tense conversation with Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, as reported by Iranian state media. Araghchi emphasized that such actions would be seen as participation in aggression, impacting the historical relations between the two nations. He also asserted Iran’s right to safeguard its sovereignty and independence while criticizing what he termed as Britain’s biased approach.

Despite the UK Government’s assurance of avoiding involvement in a broader conflict and abstaining from participating in recent US and Israel-led strikes on Iran, British bases have been reportedly used to target Iranian missiles threatening Britain and its allies, under the condition of defensive actions only. Operations against Iranian missile sites have allegedly been launched from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, drawing criticism from US President Donald Trump.

Responding to the situation, Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the 300,000 British nationals residing in the Middle East while maintaining a non-participatory stance in offensive attacks. The UK government’s refusal to allow its bases for offensive purposes has been highlighted as a strategic decision to prevent entanglement in the conflict and promote de-escalation.

Tensions have escalated due to Tehran’s control over the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping route and its attacks on energy facilities in the Gulf, raising concerns about the security of fossil fuel supplies. The US has urged Britain and its allies to deploy warships to secure the crucial 104-mile route responsible for transporting a significant portion of the world’s oil supply and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Recently, Keir Starmer emphasized the economic impact of prolonged conflict, stressing the importance of seeking a negotiated resolution with Iran. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey advocated for reopening the Strait of Hormuz as a crucial step to prevent potential rises in interest rates, underscoring the significance of resolving the ongoing tensions in the region.
