“Trump Proposes $152M Alcatraz Prison Reopening”

Date:

The former US President, Donald Trump, is proposing a $152 million investment from American taxpayers to convert the historic Alcatraz Island back into a high-security prison. Alcatraz, a famous tourist spot once known for housing notorious criminals, has been a popular destination for over 1.2 million visitors annually since the 1960s. Trump’s request for £115 million is part of a larger $1.7 billion budget proposal for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The renovation plans for Alcatraz include transforming it into a cutting-edge detention facility to accommodate the nation’s most dangerous offenders, although specific details are scarce. When the prison ceased operations in 1962, estimates indicated that annual maintenance costs, excluding daily operational expenses, would range from $3 million to $5 million. The island, nicknamed “The Rock,” is currently overrun with bird droppings, requiring all resources for rebuilding and operating the facility to be transported by boat.

The US Federal Bureau of Prisons stated that they are actively assessing the steps needed to reopen and manage USP Alcatraz. Trump’s proposal to repurpose Alcatraz was met with criticism, with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemning the idea as a waste of taxpayer money and an affront to the public’s intelligence. She vowed to oppose the plan, denouncing the Trump administration’s budget proposal as unreasonable.

Trump’s vision for Alcatraz includes significant expansion and conversion into a secure prison, citing the surrounding waters as a natural barrier due to the presence of sharks. However, experts have noted that the shark species in the area, such as leopard sharks, pose no real threat to escapees. Concerns have also been raised about the lack of basic infrastructure on the island, such as running water and sewage systems, necessitating the transportation of all supplies by boat.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie dismissed the idea of reopening Alcatraz as a federal prison, labeling it as an unserious proposal and emphasizing its current status as a beloved tourist attraction. The proposal would require approval from Congress, with anticipated debates and disagreements over the specifics of the $1.7 billion prison budget.
