In my memory, the late Queen is portrayed as a reserved individual who may have preferred a simpler life as a farmer’s wife, but ended up in one of the most prominent and public positions globally.
Despite her initial hesitations, she embraced her role as Queen and eventually found joy in it. Known for her dry humor and mischievous tendencies, she found amusement in minor mishaps during official events, a welcome break from her meticulously planned existence.
Similar to her son, Charles, the Queen faced challenges balancing family affairs with her royal duties for many years. She navigated through personal and emotional upheavals within her family, such as her sister’s desire to marry a divorced man and her sister Margaret’s subsequent divorce.
The 1990s brought further turmoil with the tumultuous breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage. Despite the difficulties, she maintained a delicate balance and even in the darkest times, Diana expressed her enduring admiration for the Queen.
Subsequent family challenges included the controversies surrounding Harry and Meghan, followed by the scandal involving Andrew. Juggling these personal crises alongside her duties as monarch and Head of State was a daunting task for a sister, mother, and grandmother.
Having accompanied the Queen extensively on her travels and met her on numerous occasions, she remained an enigmatic figure to many, including myself.
Her ability to conceal her thoughts and emotions was remarkable, yet there were moments when she revealed glimpses of vulnerability, such as when she applied lipstick without a mirror before entering a reception room at the Palace.
Another memorable encounter was when she invited me and a few other journalists aboard Britannia during a visit to South Africa, a visit that President Mandela greatly appreciated. This marked her return to South Africa since her visit with her family in 1947, fostering a deep friendship with President Mandela, referred to each other by their first names: Elizabeth and Nelson.
The Queen’s reign was punctuated by grand celebrations, with crowds of up to a million people gathering outside Buckingham Palace for her Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilees, a humbling experience for her.
Her legacy is that of a woman of quiet dignity dedicated to her duty, sometimes at the expense of her personal life, guided by her deep faith and sense of responsibility to serve her country until her last breath, a duty she fulfilled.
The sense of duty ingrained in her is evident in King Charles today, who, despite challenges, remains focused on fulfilling his responsibilities and continuing his mother’s work, a direction the late Queen would likely approve of.
While upholding the dignity of the monarchy and preserving its traditional structure, King Charles also aims to make it more accessible and personable, a shift that aligns with the principle of evolution over revolution at the Palace.
