“Iran Launches Cyber Attacks on US Amid Strait of Hormuz Tension”

Date:

Iran has initiated a series of cyber assaults on the United States shortly after President Donald Trump’s threat to obliterate the country’s civilization. This action coincides with the looming expiration of the US president’s ultimatum to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has reported that hackers affiliated with Iran are engaging in exploitative activities targeting crucial systems in the US. These cyber attackers, identified as sophisticated “advanced persistent threat” groups, are targeting internet-connected industrial systems essential for running critical services.

The hackers are exploiting devices such as programmable controllers utilized in factories, energy systems, and vital infrastructure, resulting in disruptions and financial losses. They are manipulating data and control displays to disrupt system operations, raising concerns about the potential impact on crucial services. US organizations are advised to assess their networks to minimize the risk of compromise.

Previously, the agency had flagged similar activities by CyberAv3ngers, a group linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Cyber Electronic Command (CEC). The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency stated that Iran-affiliated advanced persistent threat (APT) actors are targeting internet-facing operational technology (OT) devices, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) manufactured by Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley. This malicious activity has led to disruptions in several US critical infrastructure sectors through manipulations with project files and data on human-machine interface (HMI) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) displays, resulting in operational disruptions and financial losses.

Following Trump’s warning of severe consequences if Iran does not comply with his demand regarding the Strait of Hormuz, calls for his removal from office have emerged. Former White House director Anthony Scaramucci urged for Trump’s immediate ousting, expressing concerns over the president’s nuclear strike inclinations.

Trump has set a deadline for the Iranian regime to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 8 pm ET today.
