In Blackpool, a popular destination attracting 23 million visitors annually, various attractions like the iconic Tower, dazzling Illuminations, Coral Island arcade, and expansive beach draw crowds. Back in 1928, amidst the early days of Pleasure Beach, a unique event unfolded in the Lancashire resort. Max and Florence Chrysler, captured in black and white British Pathé footage, celebrated their wedding day outside Stephen’s on the Cliffs in Blackpool, accompanied by elephants in a grand procession through town.
These historical events are now showcased in an exhibition at Blackpool’s Showtown Museum, shedding light on the entertainment sector’s little people and how Blackpool emerged as the UK’s unofficial arts hub. During the 1910s to 1930s, Blackpool witnessed numerous little people weddings and hosted acts like the Piccolo Company, a circus troupe of 32 little performers who showcased acrobatics and strongman acts at the Tower. Notable figures like Doodles, a Tower Circus clown for nearly three decades, and Paul Walker, recognized as ‘Europe’s smallest movie actor,’ made a mark across Blackpool’s ‘tiny town’ attractions.
The exhibition, running until May 31, delves into the past with a mindful approach, celebrating these stars while revisiting the historical context free of condescension. Emily Langridge, a curator of the exhibition, highlights the significant draw these attractions held a century ago, attracting spectators from far and wide to witness these celebrated individuals.
Rebecca Nuttall from Little People UK emphasizes the exhibition’s educational aspect, focusing on language sensitivity and acknowledging the community’s achievements. The display pays tribute to trailblazers like scientist Tom Shakespeare, chef Louis Makepeace, and racer Joy Rainey, emphasizing the diverse talents within the little people community.
With a spotlight on inclusivity, the exhibition has been thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs of little people, ensuring accessibility and representation in the displays. Visitors can explore this unique showcase until May 31, with free entry granted upon obtaining a Showtown ticket.
