A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta is experiencing a surge in interest following a mention on a popular American TV show, with hopes of boosting summer tourism. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was featured in an episode of the acclaimed medical drama series, “The Pitt.” The character Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, portrayed by Noah Wyle, plans a visit to the landmark located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains’ foothills, expressing his excitement to explore the badlands.
Located approximately 150 kilometers south of Calgary, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump holds historical significance as a site where Indigenous people herded bison to plummet over an 11-meter cliff for hunting purposes. The interpretive center, integrated into the sandstone cliff with cascading floors, delves into Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, guiding visitors along a cliff top trail.
Quinton Crow Shoe, the marketing lead at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, shared that the TV show mention has sparked curiosity among visitors, prompting some to venture off the beaten path to discover the site firsthand. The increased attention generated a buzz on social media and in their email communications, showcasing the impact of the show’s exposure on public awareness and interest.
Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe remains optimistic about the recent uptick in interest translating into higher visitor numbers and motor coach tours during the peak season from May to September. Additional promotions, including discounts through the national Canada Strong Pass, have contributed positively to visitor numbers.
Emphasizing the interconnectedness of attractions in southern Alberta, Crow Shoe highlighted the collaborative spirit among sites like Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Waterton Lakes National Park, encouraging tourists to explore the diverse offerings of the region. Capitalizing on the show’s exposure, Travel Alberta released a promotional video featuring the TV characters against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump’s cliffs, while Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir shared the TV clip on social media, celebrating the global recognition of Alberta’s historical and cultural landmarks.
