Toddler’s Arthritis Misdiagnosis Sparks Awareness

Date:

A toddler has been diagnosed with arthritis after doctors initially dismissed her symptoms as mere growing pains.

Skyler Smith started experiencing leg discomfort in early 2024, prompting her concerned mother, Elaine-Maree Telfer, to seek medical advice. Despite numerous tests over 18 months, including ultrasounds, X-rays, MRIs, and blood tests, doctors finally identified juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), Hoffa’s Fat Pad (HFP) herniation, and Trigger Thumb.

Unfortunately, the JIA is incurable, leaving Skyler in persistent pain and dealing with various treatment side effects like nighttime pain, stomach issues, decreased appetite, and nausea.

Elaine-Maree, a kennel assistant from Murray, Scotland, expressed relief upon Skyler’s diagnosis, highlighting the frustration of the long wait and dismissal of her daughter’s symptoms. The rarity of having all three conditions at such a young age makes Skyler’s case unique.

JIA is extremely uncommon in children, affecting only one in 1,600, with Hoffa’s Fat Pad being even rarer in pediatric cases. Skyler’s journey began when she first experienced leg discomfort at 18 months old, leading to a series of medical consultations and eventually the diagnosis of JIA and HFP herniation.

Elaine-Maree had to advocate for her daughter during medical appointments to ensure her symptoms were taken seriously. She mentioned the uncertainty surrounding Skyler’s conditions and treatment but emphasized the support received from the Juvenile Arthritis Research charity.

Despite the challenges, Skyler’s family remains hopeful for her long-term outlook, knowing that remission is a possibility. Elaine-Maree hopes that sharing Skyler’s story will raise awareness and encourage parents to persist if they are unsatisfied with medical answers.
