Britons have the opportunity to win an astounding £1 billion jackpot in a new lottery draw revealed recently. Allwyn, the new operator of the National Lottery, announced the upcoming launch of a draw that will be linked to the popular American Powerball game.
Scheduled to occur three times a week, this draw will offer a chance to win a life-changing sum starting at £12 million, with no limit on rollovers, potentially leading to a £1 billion jackpot. Winners of the top Powerball prize will receive their payout over 30 years, amounting to over £30 million annually. Any remaining prize money will be paid to the winner’s estate if they do not survive the entire payout period.
Despite the massive jackpot, the odds of winning the Powerball are challenging at 292 million to one due to competition from 48 US state lotteries. Each line for the Powerball draw will cost £4, marking it as the most expensive National Lottery game to date.
The launch date for the new draw is yet to be finalized. Players will select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26 or opt for a Lucky Dip. Tickets can be purchased online or in-store until 11:55 pm the night before the draws, which take place in Florida at around 4 am the following day.
The introduction of the UK into the Powerball game marks the first time it will be played outside the US, following the success of the pan-European Euromillions draw in 2004. Additionally, changes have been announced for the main Lotto draw, offering players two chances to win with every £2 line, thereby improving the odds of winning any prize.
