Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines’ locations are highly classified information, with only a select few aware of their whereabouts. These submarines, part of the Vanguard-Class fleet, are equipped to launch Trident missiles upon receiving orders from the Prime Minister.
The submarine’s route is known by only four individuals onboard, and its position remains undisclosed throughout its mission. Operating silently deep underwater, the vessel receives communications only to maintain its covert presence against potential threats.
Recently, The Mirror had a unique opportunity to join the Prime Minister on a visit to a submarine returning to UK waters after a 206-day deployment. The mission was so secretive that it was referred to as “story X” beforehand, with only a handful of colleagues aware of the destination.
Accompanied by the PM, the journey involved a pre-dawn boat ride to rendezvous with the surfaced submarine off the Scottish coast. Military personnel surrounded the vessel, creating a secure perimeter as the visitors approached and embarked onto the submarine.
Exploring the interior, one is struck by a distinct blend of oil and salt scents. The tour revealed key areas such as the communications center and the control room, illuminated by screens and buttons. Notably, a secure safe holds the Prime Minister’s instructions in the event of a catastrophic nuclear strike on the government.
The crew, totaling 160 members, maintain a rigorous schedule onboard, with meals marking the passage of time. Exercise equipment is strategically placed throughout the vessel, providing physical outlets for the submariners during their extended stays below the surface.
Despite the challenging conditions, camaraderie flourishes among the crew, creating a tightly-knit community isolated from the outside world. Messages from loved ones are received weekly, though responses are not possible, resulting in prolonged periods without direct communication.
These submariners endure significant personal sacrifices, with some learning of life-changing events such as becoming a parent or the loss of a loved one while on duty, highlighting the dedication and resilience of both the crew and their families.
